Ghana application guide

Notice of Eligibility: build the file before the examination.

The official pre-examination checkpoint that confirms whether a candidate may proceed and identifies exemptions or previously passed subjects.

Ghana-focused working guide reviewed 22 August 2026. GMA, the issuing administration, approved institution, or medical examiner makes the official decision.

Who this is for

Candidates preparing for a Ghana Certificate of Competency examination or re-examination.

Intended outcome

A GMA-issued Notice of Eligibility authorising the candidate to enter the relevant written and oral examination stages.

MSA's role

We can research, organise, pre-check, and coordinate. We cannot issue the certificate, declare medical fitness, guarantee eligibility, or alter an authority's decision.

Understand the route

The pathway and its requirements.

Read the branch that matches the department, capacity, and vessel limitation. Where both branches appear, they are alternatives—not a combined qualification.

01

First eligibility assessment

Initial application

GMA checks initial training and/or qualifying sea service for the exact certificate capacity requested.

  1. 1

Obtain RMU confirmation of sea service.

  2. 2

Submit the official application, examination fee, and supporting records no later than the published deadline.

  3. 3

Provide issuing-authority contact details when certificates were not issued by GMA.

  4. 4

Wait for GMA's formal assessment rather than treating a private pre-check as approval.

02

Fresh eligibility notice

Re-examination

A previous Notice of Eligibility does not automatically authorise every later attempt.

  1. 1

Submit the existing Notice of Eligibility.

  2. 2

Complete a fresh application and pay the applicable fee.

  3. 3

Check the validity period of prior academic or professional passes.

  4. 4

Follow any additional sea-service or retraining direction arising from the result history.

Evidence file

What to gather for a proper pre-check.

The final list remains case-specific, but these records normally allow the route to be assessed without relying on memory or verbal assurances.

From file to decision

A responsible working sequence.

  1. 01

    Pre-check

Create a chronological evidence index and identify gaps or inconsistencies before formal submission.

  2. 02

    RMU confirmation

Follow the current RMU procedure for confirmation of qualifying sea service.

  3. 03

    GMA submission

Submit the confirmation, records, certificates, testimonials, verification details, and receipts through the official route.

  4. 04

    Notice and examination

Review the issued notice carefully; it controls admission and states exemptions or subjects already passed.

Check before you commit

Important watchpoints.

  • GMA currently states that eligibility-letter approval takes 14 working days; this is an official target, not an MSA guarantee.
  • GMA advises submission at least 30 days before the examination date.
  • Original records are required for scrutiny at the oral examination.
Accuracy and authority notice

Maritime requirements can change and may depend on certificate history, nationality, issuing administration, vessel flag, tonnage, propulsion power, voyage area, training route, medical findings, and accepted sea service. This page is educational preparation, not an eligibility letter or legal guarantee. Confirm the current requirements with the responsible authority before enrolling, paying, travelling, or relying on a deadline.
